Question:
An international student in my department wants to do an industrial placement. Are there any visa implications?
Answer:
Yes. Unless registered on a programme formally involving a placement year, the student will be on leave of absence during the placement, and thus in breach of the conditions of their student visa. There may be some circumstances where leave of absence is acceptable to the Home Office (eg. severe illness/injury) but work experience is unlikely to be seen as an acceptable reason.
International students seeking leave of absence are now required to seek immigration advice from Student Services before their application can be confirmed.
