The University of Sheffield's Frequently Asked Questions database

Question:

What is the difference between a postgraduate diploma and a Masters course?

Answer:

The fundamental difference between the two is that a Masters course includes a dissertation or project element whilst a diploma does not.

If you are applying for a postgraduate course at Sheffield, you may be made an offer for a postgraduate diploma in your chosen subject. In many cases this offer states that if you achieve satisfactory grades in the taught element of the course, you will then be "upgraded" to the Masters course, and can proceed to the dissertation or project element.
