Question:

What is the difference between a postgraduate diploma and a Masters course?

Answer:

The fundamental difference between the two is that a Masters course includes a dissertation or project element whilst a diploma does not.

Progressing from a diploma to a Masters

If you are applying for a postgraduate course here at Sheffield, you will often be made an offer for a postgraduate diploma in your chosen subject.

In many cases this offer also states that if you achieve satisfactory grades on the diploma option, you will then be able to proceed onto the Masters course.

This progression usually takes place after the completion of all the taught study on the course. You would then move on to the dissertation or project element in the remaining months of the course to complete the Masters.
